Liu Shaoqi (Liu Shao-ch'i) 1898 - 1969

A Hunanese peasant like Mao, Liu joined the Communist Party in 1921, and was active in urban areas before Mao's rise to power in 1935. Vice Chairman of Central People's Government, 1949, Chairman in 1959. Main target of Cultural Revolution, being named as "China's Khrushchev", and humikliated to his death. Major work, How to be a Good Communist. A colourless figure who doubted if collectivization would work in China.
