CHINA AND TIENANMEN

The images from China in 1989 were a sad rminder of the universally reactionary nature of one-party states. But to equate Chinese Communism solely with Tiananmen Square would be n hitorically inaccurate and intellectually unhelpful process. It is implementation of theory, as the Chinese leaders have discovered in their attempts to apply Marxism-Leninism in China, that led to the contradictions of Tiananmen Square. It is timely, perhaps, to explore precisely what Chinese Communism was really, how it appealed to so many Chinese and foreigners, what it stood for and what it acomplished.
