Lin Biao (Lin Piao), 1908-1971

Joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1925, and soon commanded his own regiment, showing military brilliance during the Long March and Civil War. Politburo member from 195, Minister of Defence in 1959. Aided Mao's Cultural Revolution through politicization of People's Liberation Army, emerging as Mao's chosen heir. Following attemped coup he was said to have died in a mysterious plane crash while fleeing to the USSR. An embittered megalomaniac who was generally sitrusted.
