Varazze, the old city, birthplace of Jacopo da Varagine, bishop of Genoa in the 12th century and author of "The Golden Legend", probably gets its name from the "Virgin", which was distorted to become "Varagine". It cannot be excluded however that the nme derives from the verb varare (to launch) because mny boats were constructed and launched on its beach.
