Earthquake

Baiardo, in the Armea valley behind Sanremo suffered a tremendous earthquake. It was Ash Wednesday February 23, 1887 when a tremor caused the collapse of the romanesque chuurch of San Nicolò burying 25% of the population. Bussana, above Sanremo, was totally destroyed by earthquake of 1887 and abandoned. It was until 1960s that many foreign artists discovered it and moved here. To day a colony of northern foreigners have setr up their workshops there.
