Dolceacqua, the characteristic town of the Nervia Valley, behind Ventimiglia, is known for the Doria castle. Its name, which literally means sweetwater, has nothing to do with water, but with "Dus", a sorceress. In the Celtic language a sorceress is "sagana". The Celtics of what is to-day Doceacqua were Gallic Nervii coming from the banks of german Schelda. In the East they gave the name to the town of Nervii (to-day a part of Genoa) and the West to valley of Nervia. Dolceacqua derives from "Dus-sagana", which became distorted over the centuries in Dussaga, then in Dulsaga, before coming Latinized.
