Thomas Hobbes saw himself as much more than a political philosopher that is remembered. His first treatise on political thought circulated in manuscript in 1640, when he was already fifty-two and by the time he had completeed Leviathan, at the age of sixty-three, he had said al that he remained domestically at peace, he might never have written this two master works, De Cive and Leviathan, and might have devoted his mind entirely to other branches of philosophy and classical scholarship. Political thought was being secularized, too and Hobbes stripped sovereignity of its moral basis. In Leviathan the concept of legitimacy as the justification of political authority was replaced by a concentration on power and the hability to afford protection to subjects who lived under the power, a "de facto" power.
