THE PURITAN REVOLUTION AND WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

The Puritan Revolution put an end to the theatre as Shakespeare had known it in 1642, when Parliament prohibited all staged-plays. The Restoration reopened the theatres in 1660, but the players had moved indoors, and most of the public theatres that Shakespeare used were gone. D'Avenant and Killigrew revived Shakespeare's plays at once, but Shakespeare would hardly have recognized them. The understanding of his art had decayed along with the thaetres in which it was formed.
