The French writer Guy de Maupassant placed many of his stories in Genoa and Liguria. He spent a week-end with a "conquest" in Santa Margherita and was in Portofino, Porto Maurizio and Savona with his yacht the "Bel Ami", which took its name from the novel of the same name.
