The Lote Tree.

As the Hindu tradition, the Lote Tree marks the limit of human knowledge. The Qur'an makes it clear that Muhammad saw only one of signs of God, not God himself, and later mystics emphasised the paradox of the vision, in which Muhammad both saw and did not see the Divine essence. The Sufis depicted Muhammad as a hero, blazing a new trail to God in this experience, which is so close to the experience of other mystics in other widely separated traditions. In the thirteen-century Persian account by the great poet Farid ud-Din Attar, were very close in spirit to John of the Cross, who also stressed the importance of leaving all our human concepts and experience behind, going beyond what the Qur'an called the Lote Tree, the boundary of normal mundane knowledge. Attar shows that Muhammad ultimately had to leave everybody behind: even Gabriel could not accompany the Prophet on the last stage of his journey.

Islamic Paradise.

Paradise, the prize of martyrs and good Muslims, must be depicted, in the same ways as Allah, the Prophet of Islam and the saints are also banned from illustration. However are many prints of generally heavenly places that share the chief characteristics of Paradise verdant green, flowers  fountains and lakes, rushing streams, abundant multi-coloured  birds including the regal peacock. Cool, green Paradise is in striking contrast to the arid  bare desert of Arabia, and in fact the Persian name for heaven means garden. The peacock is virtually synonymous with Paradise, and its shining feathers have many symbolic meanings. They are only feathers worthy of making a book-mark for the Koran. Jinna, the kingdom of punishment according the Hebrew and Moslem tradition, and the equivalent of the Christian Hell, is  ever shown in popular prints, even if a parallel between Liber Scalae and the Dante's Divine Comedy is possible. See my articles on the dedicated to Dante and Islam.
